A sign of those times, Billie got sidey role of an afro servant (despite of being a singing sensation) .Here Satchmo is shown to be a bandleader and introduces the members of his band, a virtual Who's Who of classic jazz greats, including trombonist Kid Ory, drummer Zutty Singleton, clarinetist Barney Bigard, guitar player Bud Scott, bassist George "Red" Callender, pianist Charlie Beal, and pianist Meade "Lux" Lewis.
set in the red light district of New Orleans, called Storyville, during its final days. The district existed from 1897 to 1917; it was created in effort to limit prostitution to one area of the city.

Where the Blues Was Born in New Orleans (w. m. Cliff Dixon, Bob Carleton) – Performed by Louis Armstrong and His Band, featuring introductions of each band member by Armstrong, in this order: Charlie Beal – piano, Kid Ory – trombone, Zutty Singleton – drums, Barney Bigard – clarinet, Bud Scott – guitar and cigar, Red Callendar – bass, and himself – cornet. New Orleans film takes some staggering liberties with history (such as suggesting that one

sympathetic white man was the driving force behind the success and popularity of jazz...), it does depict the exodus of jazz (or ragtime as it was then known) musicians from Storyville to Chicago in one of its most poignant scenes. Louis Armstrong, in his 40s in the film, did make the journey from New Orleans to Chicago as a young man, following the closure of Storyville, and initially found his success in the windy city rather than the crescent city.

Of course we know who is the real star once she starts singing :)

Fine and Mellow ... forever

I had loved Fine and Mellow ever since I had first started listening to Billy Holiday.

At that time I did not know anything about her and picked her tape just on a whim. I was hooked to it, much to chagrin of my room mates and I continued to explore and learn more Billy even as the tape wore off due to over usage.

This sound can be easily noticed a lot of old bollywood tracks. I guess this was their concept of western and happening music, as rock and roll was yet to arrive in the scene.

Fine and mellow is a regular 12 bar blues which was one reason I gravitated to this song and was one of my earliest Billy Holiday favorite. Sadly I could never find this particular version among all others littered across cyberspace. With time I came to know about the story behind it

Actually this recording came in as a reunion of old swinging stars. A sense of excitement as well as nostalgia is cracking among players. Especially during the second solo by Lester "Prez" Young. Billy doesn't just follow him perfectly she's loving it too .....

Me too :) It's a treat to watch them play together!.

Lester and Billy, their story is a stuff of movies and books. Maybe I'll cover it during next post. ..

This video features tribute to Harrison by Top Petty, Jack Lynn, Prince and more. Playing rhythm guitar is Harrison Jr. Dhani. He looks just like his dad.
The best thing about this song is the beautiful guitar solo by TAFKAP Prince. Prince is generally not considered as serious guitar player or musician and people think of him as a kind of freak.

Well Prince settles this question once for all times. For those who don't know it, Prince can play more than 30 instruments and his record company was so impressed by his talant that he was given full creative and production control of his albums when he was still a teenager.

I like his onstage moves, really really smooth.

Delicious the social bookmarking tool has been a pioneer and poster boy for the social applications powering the web2.0. I have been a huge fan of this site since long and birdsIview has had few posts featuring delicious.
One major reason for Delicious's success is support for bookmark tagging which allows users to quickly locate the bookmarks they have saved. Tagging also allows aggregation of social data into very useful and exciting information. Over time bookmark search function has seen a lot of improvement such as Browser toolbar based search, director etc.
Recently delicious announced new exciting updates in the search interface which are quite an improvement.
New Search features include (see figure):

Time Filters allow to filter results based on time,
Delicious Trends Graph allows to visualize bookmarking trends for an item during the time interval.

Was really hoping to be allowed to go home this weekend to organize shifting from Pune to Bangalore (and be with apple to be honest).
That has been shot down by bossji and I'll have to wait till at least Wednesday to start. This means spending 2 more days by the dusty outer ring road of Bangalore doing absolutely nothing, I'm bored with cursing one and all responsible elements by now.

While looking for new data visualization tools on internet, I came across wordle which essentially is an online tag cloud creator.
Using wordle one can create tagclouds from any blog, web site or any chunk of text supplied by user.
Moreover, it is possible to fine tune the way tag cloud is displayed using various options like:

Tag orientations.
Tag Fonts.
Color schemes
Number of tags etc.

To see it action, I created a tag cloud based on my current Resume. Wordle generated tag cloud from this, shown below:

I think it's pretty cool application and is quite usefule with Tag Clouds gaining more and more popularity as an alternate way to quickly visualize information loaded in large chunks of texts.
I wish it offered a tighter control over the tags words which appear in the clouds. This way more the conveyed information can be more precise and relevant.

I discovered this awsome music shop in Camp Pune which features eclectic and rare CD which the owner prodly says "You will not find this kind of stuff in crosswords and planetM" . The best part is that he himself is a music freak and loves to talk about it.
Really its a pleasre dropping in there whenever I'm in the area.
On his recommendation I got myself this CD: Larry and Lee
Who Larry and Lee?
You may not have heard of them, but you have heard them for sure. Think The Wall (Floyd) and think Steely Dan. They are everywhere, being on top of list of hottest sessions guitarists.
This album is surely on top of my charts these days.

In the space of just 6 months YouTube has not only overtaken Yahoo Video as the most popular Web video-sharing service on the planet, but it's now approx 3 times as big as Yahoo's product!
In the following graph clearly demonstrates YouTube's spectacular growth trends compared with those of Yahoo! and Google services.

As a matter of fact my past few postings have been making extensive use of videos provided by YouTube.
YouTube presents videos from a wide range of subjects, from popular music to personal cam captures. You can even find a good collection of hindi movie related stuff too.

The growing popularty of YouTube has led to its banning from certain corporate network, a final clinching proof of its popularity. :)

Yeh Hai Meri Kahani : Zinda

The Pakistani band Strings are the slickest Hindi singing Indi Pop band in the current times.

They are hugely successful as well with one after another singles hitting the charts with a bang. Their track : Naa Jaane Kyon from Spiderman 2 OST was a huge hit.

I had a chance to see them perform live in Bangalore where they performed with Indian Ocean as part of the Unity Concert. They performed very well and have a very polished sound and look which contrasted sharply with Indian Ocean which has more earthy and punchy sound.

Strings is unusual too becaues they only have two members with no drums and bass. They used drum machine and I think Midi sequences to get the full band sound.

I like The Strings for:

Perfect marrige of Hindi lyrics with screaming guitar sounds and steady rock beats.
Nice vocals.
Very slick videos

Recently they were featured in the Soundtrack of the movie Zinda in this punchy song : Yeh Meri Kahani. The song has actors Sanjay Dutt and John Abraham helping out on vocals. I love the song and the video.

This surely does sound a lot boring than the real sound of walking bass.

I have long been fascinated by it but without any understanding of the how's and why's involved, it always seemed rocket science to me.

Kevin Van Sant explains the concept involved in a video lesson. I 'll try to add notes to it as i understand more of it in following blogs.

Rock band U2 has always intrigued me. They are allways there in list of Tops. Top annual earners, popularity, even guitar world’s most important people blah blah..... What is wired about them is that they are not your traditional blues based rock. Hell, there is hardly ever a showcase shining long guitar solo which make gives rock and rollers most of their guitar gods!!

"So what makes U2 great!". I asked this question to Oliver, the most vocal U2 fan I have ever met. He said for one they are great because they managed to stick together for more than 25 years. I’m sure he had told me more but the conversation got washed in Beer and come to think of it, its more than 5 years since we had this talk.

Personally I have never been a U2 fanatic but you'd always find U2 songs in my play lists. Over the years I managed to come out of Joshua Tree fixation and got more of their music. One reason I love them is same as most of other people in world: BONO, The way he writes and sings the songs, there is simply nobody else like him.

Aah the songs.....Which brings me to the question what’s your #1 U2 song?

For me for a long time it was With or without you. Then it was One from Actung Baby. Really awesome song. If you disagree then just sing along with it and you will see my point.

Ndoc is a nifty tool to generate documentation for .net projects. It is very easy to install and equally easy to use. Here is what you have to do:

Download the installer from http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ndoc/
Install the program. You need to have HTML Help installed in you machine. You can download it from http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/htmlhelp/html/hwMicrosoftHTMLHelpDownloads.asp
Start nDoc application.
You can open a new project. There is option of opening a visual studio project as well.
Use add button in Select assemblies to Document section to add assemblies. I did not user Visual studio option and manually added the assemblies I used in my project.
Set properties of documents as you want them. You can change HtmlHelpName property to set the HTML Help Title. I chose the document type to default MSDN.
Control + Shift + B will build the documentation.
Viola you have a .chm (Compiled Html File) as well as Web version of Documentation.
Ctrl + shift + V will display it for you.

That’s it fellows. Rest of the time can now be whiled away in writing Blogs :)

The House of the Rising Sun

The song was surely on my mind when i had seen this building for the first time.
It is located at the edge of Hill leading to Powai facing east. I always imagine seeing sunrise from this place. I have seen Sun rising from far east from top of the hill at IIT and it was something i will always remember. The building is appropriately called Sun City
Recently my friend Rohan brought a flat in this building. Last Saturday I went to hang out with him and oversee the work of fitting accessories to the flat. His flat is on 12th floor. The view from nice french windows was fantastic. It faces west and overlooks glowing Heeranandani.
We then went to the Top Floor which is still under construction and the views from the TOP is nothing short of mind blowing.
I only had my cell camera to take the pictures. These pictures have been published in previous posts.
One of these Mornings will find me there with a nicer camera very soon. Inshallah!

Interesting. For most of my friends the entire passage above will make complete sense. Words written in English while meaning and sounding in hindi.
T9 dictionary in my cellphone and in cells of most of the people around here is full on words like this. Even people who understand the basics of English use it in SMS, emails etc where they cant type in Devnagri script.

Yesterday i replaced my old Karuna strings for a barnd new EXL110 - Regular Light. My friend told me that im going to enjoy playing on it.
It is awsome. Loved playing it like anything. It is so easy and smooth. My aching shoulder reminded me its 3 hours since ive been playing without a break. I never knew changing strings could make so much difference.

This Blog attempts to chronicle my learning and development efforts in realms of mobile computing, specifically with Microsoft compact framework.

Pocket Expense Tracking Program

Premise: Benefits of expense tracking are very well known. It helps to keep finances tightly controlled. Moreover one can study expense data to quantify spending habits and this can be used to cut down expenses. Certain reoccurring wasteful expenses can be identified and dealt with in suitable manner. A mobile enabled program in which a user can punch in exact details for each and every transaction can be very helpful as it removes the drudgery involved with writing down expenses later when the details might be lost. Features:

The Application should allow user to quickly punch in the Item on which expense is incurred. Ideally this information should be available in a drop down with options of adding new Item.
The application should store date/time of transaction.
User should be allowed to add some notes to each transaction.
This information should be stored locally on the device till the Application 'synchronizes' it with the main central repository. This central Database can exist on a Desktop and sync may occur using a web service or active Sync.

Application Architecture:

The Pocket Expense Tracking Program is a microsoftCF based application. It will save the expense in an XML file. It will use active sync to synchronies the data.

Item input comboBox: On change a new window will open. This window will allow user to choose expense.
New Item check box:
New Item Text Box: if checkbox is selected then new textbox should not be empty. This value should be added to items table on submit a new row will be added to table.
Date Text Box: By default current date/time will be displayed.
Amount Text Box:
Notes Text Box: Multiline memo field.
Left Menu: Submit
Right Menu: Cancel

On submit thank you window will be displayed. Thank you window will have two options new and close. Close will close the application.

Synchronization

Synchronies with active sync. This will connect to server application. Server application will add to excel file. This will use active sync. to upload

Getting feet wet...
Never before created a blog. Infact I had this account for quite some time but i could never get enuff time. Too much work pressure no pc at home. Im planning to keep it as my crib post. I think i should have more time for myself.
